Sigh. An 18 watt tube amp with 2x12 speakers is very, very
loud. People keep saying that it's loud enough for practice or
(maybe) a small gig. That's what people say. But people often
say stuff.
An 18 watt tube amp with 2x12 speakers is loud enough for any
gig you will ever get in your life. If the head count goes over
100 (= si le public dépasse 100 personnes ) or so, the venue (that means the club or the festival or
concert promoters or theater owners) will REQUIRE that you mic
all your amps, regardless of how large they are. You will not
be allowed to use your 120 watt tube head and cab, or 85, 60 or
40 watt amp, for anything other than as stage monitors. I am
serious.
Why? Here's why: the loudness you would need to reach the rear
areas of a 300+ person show would probably damage the hearing
of the people in the front. Then they (or their parents) would
sue for damages. They could win, courts being the way they are.
Venues rely on calibrated, engineered, multi-zone PA systems --
with proper delay, in milleseconds -- to do two things and
maybe three:
1) Guarantee that people in all seats or all areas have at
least a reasonable opportunity to hear the band.
2) Prevent damaging sound levels, so customers will not be
injured.
3) In a club, allow bartenders to hear drink orders, at the bar
and from wait staff, and allow at least one or two areas where
cutomers can hear one another speak, if they talk loudly. (No
drink orders, no money.)
I've read a number of posts on here from people who think the
Fender DRRI (22 watts, 1X12 speaker) is too loud. I am not
making this up. *I* think the DRRI is about right.
I play a Peavey C50 2x12 myself. It's about 37 watts, or so.
It's louder than it needs to be in most situations. I like the
2x12 configuration, though. And I like the other features it
has. Wish it didn't weigh 60 pounds.
Last point: someone in his thread mentioned that a 180 watt amp
is 2X louder than an 18 watt amp. This is correct. So a 40 watt
amp is only about 10% louder than an 18 watt amp. That's not a
lot.
